From the man page of psql I found this:
echo 'cluster; analyze'|psql -U postgres dbname

Works both on 8.1 and 8.3. From a user pov this is a bit strange, but I 
found a workaround and that's enough for me. Thanks, Alvaro, for the 
hint.
