You're not allowed to log in as root.  Period.  Use a different user.  There
is no possible way you should be doing this as root anyway.

I like to suggest you (dr_pompei) to have a look at the docs about pg_hba.conf.

Andrew, it seems "root" is here a postgresql user (which have rights to connect to "somedb")
