It should be psql <db_name> (not pgsql), at least on versions greater than 7.3. And I agree, postgresql 7.2.2 is pretty outdated.

Use pg_dump.

BTW... Your PostgreSQL version is outdated and is not supported by
community (I'm not sure whether SuSE supports it or not). You should
update to a newer version.
