Questions:
 What happens if you instead do an ltrace?
 What's the output of netstat while this is happening?  Do you see
   connections to the remote MySQL server in netstat?
 What are the file permissions on pam_mysql.so?
 Does the access time of /etc/pam.d/pop (ls -lu or stat) change in accordance
   with attempts to login via pop3?
 What pop server are you using?  What PAM service has your pop server registered
   itself as?
