I have "Use default domain" in smb.conf for winbind (in fact wbinfo -a foo%foopwd works well, with no domain indication). I've found the problem anyway (sorry for having posted too soon, but I've been fighting with if since this morning): I had assigned /dev/null (that IS in /etc/shells) as default shells for such users. For some reason mod_auth_pam doesn't like it Now I have /bin/bash and it works.
