*BSD and Linux have very different password file formats. You may want to look into that. try running 'ypmatch nistest passwd' on the linux box when it is bound to the FreeBSD server. Make sure that the line you get back looks like: nistest:8LYUXxAbvWO.I:427:249:Nis Test User:/home/nistest:/bin/sh The BSD guys have additional fields (I believe they are optional) in the passwd line for the user's login class, the password change time, and the account expiration time. Last time that I set this up, I remember hacking the yp Makefile so that it would throw away these extra fields.
