This may sound like a complicated issue, but I don't know where to ask it. I'm having and odd problem. For some reason, RedHat did not include getty_ps with 7.2 (or any of the 7.x series). So after installing 7.2 I had problems with agetty and decided to try using the rpm from 6.2 of getty_ps on 7.2. It seemed to work fine. But after a while I started getting weird looking logs. Let me go ahead and state this. I am using Wyse 160 terminals connected via a Cyclades Yep serial port expander. This has worked for us for a long time, and we never had this problem (matter of fact, I don't even expericnce this problem with 7.2 and agetty, just when using the 6.2 package). Now so far you're probably thinking what does this have to do with pam. Well, the log entries I get ONLY happen when all the terminals are turned off. They look like this: Jan 11 17:32:28 gulf login(pam_unix)[9736]: bad username [Û«í[uw¿o}w¿omou\177¿{uou}{u¿·¯»¿¯uomwm}íëku{ouo¿»¯·¯·½¿{m\177¿oo¿}¿wu }o_uoo¯íëíëwuow¯wuow{}ou{¯{om¿oowmo»¿Û«í[uw¿o}w¿omou\177¿{uou}{u¿·¯»¿¯u omwm}íëku{ouo¿»¯·¯·½¿{m\177¿oo¿}¿wu}o_uoo¯íëíëwuow¯wuow{}ou{¯{om¿oowm o»¿Û«í[uw¿o}w¿omou\177¿{uou}{u¿·¯»¿¯uomwm}íëku{ouo¿»¯·¯·½¿{m\177¿oo¿}¿ wu}o_uoo¯íëíëwuow¯wuow{}ou{¯{om¿oowmo»¿Û«í[uw¿o}w¿omou\177¿{uou}{u¿·¯»¿ ¯uomwm}íëku{ouo¿»¯·¯·½¿{m\177¿oo¿}¿wu}o_uoo¯íëíëwuow¯wuow{}ou{¯{om¿oo wmo»¿Û«í[uw¿o}w¿omou\177¿{uou}{u¿·¯»¿¯uomwm}íëku{ouo¿»¯·¯·½¿{m\177¿oo¿ }¿wu}o_uoo¯íëíëwuow¯wuow{}ou{¯{om¿oowmo»¿Û«í[uw¿o}w¿omou\177¿{uou}{u¿·¯ »¿¯uomwm}íëku{ouo¿»¯·¯·½¿{m\177¿oo¿}¿wu}o_uoo¯íëíëwuow¯wuow{}ou{¯{om¿ oowmo»¿Û«í[uw¿o}w¿omou\177¿{uou}{u¿·¯»¿¯uomwm}íëku{ouo¿»¯·¯·½¿{m\177¿o o¿}¿wu}o_uoo¯íëíëwuow¯wuow{}ou{¯{om¿oowmo»¿Û«í[uw¿o}w¿omou\177¿{uou}{u¿ ·¯»¿¯uomwm}íëku{ouo¿»¯·¯·½¿{m\177¿oo¿}¿wu}o_uoo¯íëíëwuow¯wuow{}ou{¯{o m¿oowmo»¿Û«í[uw¿o}w¿omou\177¿{uou}{u¿·¯»¿¯uomwm}íëku{ouo¿»¯·¯·½¿{m\177 ¿oo¿}¿wu}o_uoo¯íëíëwuow¯wuow{}ou Jan 11 17:32:28 gulf login[9736]: FAILED LOGIN 1 FROM (null) FOR Û«í[uw¿o}w¿omou\177¿{uou}{u¿·¯»¿¯uomwm}íëku{ouo¿»¯·¯·½¿{m\177¿oo¿}¿wu} o_uoo¯íëíëwuow¯wuow{}ou{¯{om¿oowmo»¿Û«í[uw¿o}w¿omou\177¿{uou}{u¿·¯»¿¯uo mwm}íëku{ouo¿»¯·¯·½¿{m\177¿oo¿}¿wu}o_uoo¯íëíëwuow¯wuow{}ou{¯{om¿oowmo »¿Û«í[uw¿o}w¿omou\177¿{uou}{u¿·¯»¿¯uomwm}íëku{ouo¿»¯·¯·½¿{m\177¿oo¿}¿w u}o_uoo¯íëíëwuow¯wuow{}ou{¯{om¿oowmo»¿Û«í[uw¿o}w¿omou\177¿{uou}{u¿·¯»¿¯ uomwm}íëku{ouo¿»¯·¯·½¿{m\177¿oo¿}¿wu}o_uoo¯íëíëwuow¯wuow{}ou{¯{om¿oow mo»¿Û«í[uw¿o}w¿omou\177¿{uou}{u¿·¯»¿¯uomwm}íëku{ouo¿»¯·¯·½¿{m\177¿oo¿} ¿wu}o_uoo¯íëíëwuow¯wuow{}ou{¯{om¿oowmo»¿Û«í[uw¿o}w¿omou\177¿{uou}{u¿·¯» ¿¯uomwm}íëku{ouo¿»¯·¯·½¿{m\177¿oo¿}¿wu}o_uoo¯íëíëwuow¯wuow{}ou{¯{om¿o owmo»¿Û«í[uw¿o}w¿omou\177¿{uou}{u¿·¯»¿¯uomwm}íëku{ouo¿»¯·¯·½¿{m\177¿oo ¿}¿wu}o_uoo¯íëíëwuow¯wuow{}ou{¯{om¿oowmo»¿Û«í[uw¿o}w¿omou\177¿{uou}{u¿· ¯»¿¯uomwm}íëku{ouo¿»¯·¯·½¿{m\177¿oo¿}¿wu}o_uoo¯íëíëwuow¯wuow{}ou{¯{om ¿oowmo»¿Û«í[uw¿o}w¿omou\177¿{uou}{u¿·¯»¿¯uomwm}íëku{ouo¿»¯·¯·½¿{m\177¿ oo¿}¿wu}o_uoo¯íëíëwuow¯w That in itself is not so bad, but this continues for nearly a day until the system LOCKS UP. I can't explain this because I have no idea, but as far as I can tell, PAM is using up some system resources until they are gone. Doesn't make sense to me. Myabe someone can help me from here. I'll use agetty, but I can't figure out how to tell it to use only software flow control and not hardware, and set option like I could with getty_ps with /etc/gettydefs. Agetty doesn't have a config file so I can't figure out how to do it other than manually set them after someone logs in everytime. Thanks for any help you can give. This is plauging us very much. dime@gulfsales Glover George Gulf Sales & Supply, Inc.
