I have ported a lot of GNU and open source software to HPUX 11 and you have summerized the situation correctly. We were using 64-bit HPUX 11, but the GNU compiler doesn't support it as a code target yet. We had to use the 32-bit SOM binary format to compile Apache with loadable modules.
