Thanks Matt,

Of course (facepalm), the answer was right under my nose.
Evergreen already gets a number of product versions directly from Github, so that could work.

I'll see how that goes

The github releases page here:

https://github.com/openssl/openssl/releases

Is available in "atom" format:

https://github.com/openssl/openssl/releases.atom

It doesn't seem to contain links to the actual downloadable assets
though - although you could infer their names from the tag name.
