how to ask peer to sign a message

This is a bit off topic but I find openssl users a good group to ask about
it.

In the case of an SSL connection where the client has a certificate, is it
possible for the server to request the client to sign a message with the
private key of that certificate?

For example, for a webmail system, when user press "send" button, is it
possible for the server to ask the client browser to sign the email with
the same private key, whose certificate is used to log in to that very
webmail?

If it is possible, is it by a special form or javascript?

Thanks!

Regards
