Just something to help others that use openSSL in Node.js add-ons with recent Node builds (0.11.15); building node to use the system ssl library (rather than it's built in copy) appears to make a significant difference to an add-on that attempts to use the ssl library itself. Doing this resolved my prior inexplicable problem.
