It can when killed by a signal:

On FreeBSD:

[10004 eitan@gravity (100%) ~ ]%cat /dev/zero
[1]    29728 terminated  cat /dev/zero
[10005 eitan@gravity (100%) ~ !143!]%echo $?
143
