Karl Erb and Valérie Pécresse sign Letter of Intent.

On Friday, June 25, 2010, NSF and the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research signed a Letter of Intent to expand access to each other's research infrastructure in polar and near-polar regions for collaborative research projects. The cooperation will be focused on both the Arctic and Antarctic regions and will be led by NSF's Office of Polar Programs (OPP) and the French organizations Institut Polaire Français Paul Emile Victor and Centre National de la Recherche ...

Rasmus Nielsen teamed up with Chinese researchers to compare the genomes of 50 Tibetans living above 14,000 feet to 40 Han Chinese living at essentially sea level. They found that within the last 3,000 years, Tibetans evolved genetic mutations in a number of genes having to do with how the body deals with oxygen, making it possible for Tibetans to thrive at high altitudes while their Han relatives cannot. Alzheimer's Imaging Study Identifies Changes in Brain's White Matter

News thumbnail of brain MRI An imaging study used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)  to detect deterioration of white matter tracts in the brains of older adults at high risk for Alzheimer's disease. The data suggest that changes in white matter connections may be among the earliest brain changes in Alzheimer's disease, which may prove important for early detection by noninvasive imaging.

Transformation Optics Make a U-turn for the Better

News thumbnail - schematic Berkeley researchers have combined the scientific fields of transformation optics and plasmonics to demonstrate that, with only moderate modifications of the dielectric component of a metamaterial, the physical space through which light travels can be altered with promising results, such as the creation of a 180-degree bend that won't alter the energy or properties of a light beam as it makes the u-turn, or a plasmonic version of a Luneburg lens.

Scientists have discovered that 22 species of passerines--songbirds and perching birds--in the contiguous U.S. are carriers of low-pathogenicity avian influenza. Pathogenicity is the ability of a germ to produce an infectious disease in an organism.

The researchers report their results today in the journal BMC Infectious Diseases.

The research is supported by the joint National Institutes of Health (NIH)-National Science Foundation (NSF) Ecology of Infectious ...
