 artist's concept of a Kuiper Belt object The trick is to know enough about the orbit of a Kuiper belt object (KBO) to be able to predict its path and observe it as it passes in front of a star. This was done successfully for the first time last October when a team of 18 astronomy groups led by James Elliot, a professor of planetary astronomy in MIT's department of earth, atmospheric and planetary sciences, observed an occultation by an object named "KBO 55636."

The effect is especially pronounced in the Amazon basin, where replacing flowering plants with non-flowering varieties would result in an 80 percent decrease in the area covered by ever-wet rainforest.

Autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) Sentry is loaded onto the research vessel Endeavor.

To characterize subsurface oil plumes in the Gulf using novel technology and the latest in biogeochemical techniques, a team of scientists from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) embarked on June 17 for a 12-day research effort in the Gulf of Mexico.

Aboard the research vessel (R/V) Endeavor, they are conducting projects funded through the National Science Foundation (NSF)'s rapid response program.
