Astrophysicists at University of
California, Santa Barbara, are the first scientists to identify two white dwarf stars in an eclipsing binary system, allowing for the first direct radius measurement of a rare white dwarf composed of pure helium. The results will be published in Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Possible New Class of Supernovae Puts Calcium in Your Bones
Thu, 27 May 2010 09:51:00 -0500
University of California,
Berkeley, astronomers have discovered several examples of an unusual type of exploding star that may be a new class of supernovae spewing calcium into the galaxy, which eventually ends up in all of us. A team from the Weizmann Institute joined Alex Filippenko and his colleagues to study one supernova detected in 2005, and concluded that it resulted from the thermonuclear explosion of a helium layer on a low-mass white dwarf.

Responding to the trend that American K-12 students lag behind their international peers in science and math, Lehigh University has joined with a nearby school district to fashion a unique, hands-on approach to the problem--the Dr. John A. McAdams Jr. Space Center. The Space Center is believed to be the only such educational/research facility at this level anywhere in the country.

Companies located in the United States reported worldwide sales of $11 trillion in calendar year 2008 and spent $330 billion on research and development (R&D). Nearly $234 billion of the R&D expense was for R&D conducted in company facilities located in the United States. This is according to new figures from the National Science Foundation's first ever Business R&D and Innovation Survey (BRDIS) developed jointly with the U.S. Census Bureau.

The Great Pond Experiment: Regional vs. Local Biodiversity

Scientist Jon Chase once worked in a lab that set up small pond ecosystems for experiments on species interactions and food webs.
"We would try to duplicate pond communities with a given experimental treatment," he says.
"We put 10 of this species in each pond, and five of these species, and eight of the other species, and 15 milliliters of this nutrient and 5 grams of that and 'sproing,' every replicate would do its own thing and nothing would be like anything ...
