J'accuse ... systemd. I have no idea how that handoff is meant to work, I think it's supposed to get a file handle somehow for the card device? I don't know and am not particularly inclined to find out. Maybe someone else who looks at this bug tracker knows. Perhaps you can get some help from ubuntu support channels? This doesn't seem to be a nouveau issue (at least not yet).
