I've got Mindspring (one of Earthlink's many companies), and it doesn't 
require authorization in that format.. My server line in nntpcache.servers 
looks like the following :

username:password@news.mindspring.com DEFAULT  4h   2d   2d   30m   60d 
60d
#
%BeginGroups
*               news.mindspring.com
