I had this problem, when i first got nntpcache to work, i blame it on seeing the program run with a "working" config then "kill"ing the process to get an "optimal" config, before the rebuild finished, every time after that i kept getting 417 groups complete. What i did to fix it was rpm -evv nntpcache (ie nuke the whole thing) then make sure all files created by nntpcache were removed (i kept MY config files, that's it) then reinstalled with rpm -ivv nntpcache*rpm.
