Try upgrading to nntpcache-2.4.0b5 first. This seems *fairly* stable under
linux. 

Any idea how few/many groups your host news server has? If it has under
3000, you'll need to lower the 'minActive' setting in your config file, to
a lower number.

Let me know if this still doesn't help.
