I upgraded to 'nntpcache-2.4.0b1' for the Y2K fix, and instead of putting back in my (poor) hack for authenticating to a remote server, I set it up to use the new support for username and password in the server configuration file. I use supernews, and was getting errors when NNTPcache started stating: list.c:472: refused list overview.fmt on news.supernews.com.:'480 authentication required' I managed to work around this, perhaps nntpcache should use the hack I had in my original authentication patch, where immediately after opening a connection to the remote server, send a 'next' command and check for a 480 response, then authenticate if needed.
