NIH PROJECT MODELS CULTURALLY APPROPRIATE ALCOHOL USE AND SUICIDE PREVENTIONS FOR YOUTH IN ALASKA NATIVE AND OTHER INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES
Webinar will highlight ongoing NIAAA intervention research.
What: Developing culturally appropriate interventions to prevent alcohol-related problems among American Indian and Alaska Native communities is a high priority for the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), part of the National Institutes of Health. This webinar will present a case study of one such NIAAA-supported project now underway. Led by NIAAA grantee Dr. Stacy Rasmus of the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, in collaboration with the Yup'ik Native Alaskan community, the project examines how tapping into a community's culture can provide a cornerstone for youth substance abuse and suicide prevention efforts. Such culturally appropriate and community-based principles may be applicable in youth prevention efforts in similar communities across the country. Discussants will include Dr. Rasmus, NIAAA Director Dr. George Koob, and members of the Yup'ik community.
