NIH DIRECTORS ADDRESS BRAIN HOT TOPICS AT ANNUAL SOCIETY FOR NEUROSCIENCE MEETING

WHAT:

On Sunday, Oct. 20, 2019 at a press conference at the Society for Neuroscience's annual Meeting, National Institutes of Health directors will discuss the most exciting and significant brain-related research coming out of their institutes.

The directors will present a range of research and initiatives including discussion of the astounding number of research tools produced by the BRAIN Initiative in its first five years; neuroethical implications and considerations in cutting-edge neuroscience research; updates on large brain development studies in healthy children and those affected by the opioid crisis; research to better understand the structure and function of all cells in human and rodent brains; how alcohol use disorder affects the brain's immune system and the role of alcohol in "deaths of despair;" a collaboration with Centers for Medicaid & Medicare Services to investigate acupuncture as potential treatment of chronic low back pain in older adults; science that is advancing knowledge of the brain cannabinoid system and its involvement in pain; and NIH efforts to advance knowledge of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.

There will also be a brief overview of the NIH HEAL Initiative, which recently funded $945 million of research awards.

A question and answer session will follow the directors' remarks.
