MEDIA ADVISORY

SHAW PRIZE WINNER TO CHAIR ONE-DAY NIH WORKSHOP ON THE SEARCH FOR NOVEL, NONOPIOID NATURAL PRODUCTS FOR PAIN RELIEF

WHAT:
Chaired by 2010 Shaw Prize recipient Dr. David Julius <https://www.ucsf.edu/news/2010/05/5991/julius-named-receive-shaw-prize> of the University of California, San Francisco, the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health's (NCCIH) Natural Products and Pain workshop <https://nccih.nih.gov/news/events/npworkshop> is designed to facilitate the identification of novel, effective, and nonopioid analgesic natural products that are not addictive. Speakers from government, industry, and academia will discuss the history of and research barriers to the study of such natural products for treating and managing pain. Discussions will focus on identifying promising leads based on traditional medicine, discovery and identification of active plant-, animal-, and microbial-derived natural products, and how to characterize their mechanisms of action. Talks will be organized around promising known nonopioid classes of natural products from various sources and will address discoveries and challenges past researchers have encountered. NCCIH is part of the National Institutes of Health.

WHY:
This workshop targets researchers engaged in basic and mechanistic scientific inquiry in the fields of natural products and pain signaling. By the end of the workshop, NCCIH hopes to uncover novel and important contributions aimed at solving the current pain and opioid crises.

WHEN:
Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2019; 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m. EST.

WHERE:
Balcony B, Natcher Conference Center (Building 45), NIH Main Campus, Bethesda, Maryland.

This workshop will be streamed live and archived on the NIH Videocast website <https://videocast.nih.gov/>. Members of the media can contact the NCCIH Press Team at <e-mail:nccihpress@xxxxxxxxxxxx> or 301-496-7790 to register.
