MEDIA ADVISORY

SCIENCE WRITERS' WORKSHOP: "THE HUMAN GENOME: A DECADE OF DISCOVERY, CREATING A HEALTHY FUTURE"

WHO:
Science and medical writers

WHAT:
Science Reporters' Workshop on "The Human Genome: A Decade of Discovery, Creating A Healthy Future"

WHEN:
8:30 am to 4 pm, Monday, June 7, 2010

WHERE:
Grand Hyatt Washington
1000 H Street NW
Farragut Square and Lafayette Park Rooms
Washington D.C., 20001
202-582-1234

WHY:
Observed 10th anniversary of the completion of the draft human genome and to consider where the field is going.

Ten years ago, on June 26, NIH Director Francis S. Collins, M.D., Ph.D. stood in the White House and declared the draft sequence of the human genome to be complete. That event ended a public battle with Celera, Inc., and launched the genome era. The National Human Genome Research Institute has organized a daylong workshop for science and medical writers on Monday, June 7, 2010, to briefly review what has been accomplished since that June day a decade ago and where the field is going.

The workshop, arranged in panels with short presentations to emphasize discussion, will examine a range of news- and research-related issues, including:

-- Panel One: The Basics: What Has Sequencing Taught Us About The Genome And How It Works?
-- Panel Two: Genetic Variation: Why Does It Matter?
-- Panel Three: Disruptive Technologies and the Data Avalanche
-- Lunch Speaker: NIH Director Francis S. Collins, M.D., Ph.D., reflects on the Genome Era and What Will Happen Next
-- Panel Four: Population Genomics and The Environment
-- Panel Five: Medical Impact of Genetic Research
-- Panel Six: Creating Medical Breakthroughs: New Strategies in Treatment Development
-- Panel Seven: Privacy And Testing - What Do People Want?
-- Closing Remarks by NHGRI Director Eric Green, M.D., Ph.D.: The Future of Genomics

Possible news stories include the development of a drug for a genetic disease now undergoing FDA review; new research on what people want to know about their genes and how they use the information; and a report on the first research participant at the NIH Clinical Center to have his whole genome sequenced.

NHGRI is asking reporters to register for this event so we can ensure there is enough food for everyone. The DEADLINE to register is 12 p.m. EDT, Wednesday, June 2. To register to attend, or if you have any questions, please contact Geoff Spencer, <e-mail:spencerg@xxxxxxxxxxxx>, or Omar McCrimmon, <e-mail:mccrimmono@xxxxxxxxxxxx>, 301-402-0911. Please make them aware of any special accommodations you may require.

NHGRI is one of 27 institutes and centers at the NIH, an agency of the Department of Health and Human Services. The NHGRI Division of Extramural Research supports grants for research and for training and career development at sites nationwide. Additional information about NHGRI can be found at its Web site, <www.genome.gov>.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) -- The Nation's Medical Research Agency -- includes 27 Institutes and Centers and is a component of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. It is the primary federal agency for conducting and supporting basic, clinical and translational medical research, and it investigates the causes, treatments, and cures for both common and rare diseases.
