DR. NORA D. VOLKOW Director, National Institute on Drug Abuse, National Institutes of Health Dr. Nora D. Volkow was appointed Director of NIDA in May 2003. She is recognized as one of the world's leading experts on drug addiction and brain imaging. Her work has been pivotal in demonstrating that drug addiction is a disease of the brain. She pioneered the use of brain imaging to investigate the toxic effects of drugs and the effects of drugs responsible for their addictive properties in the human brain. In addition, she has led important research in the areas of obesity, schizophrenia, aging, and ADHD. Dr. Volkow has published more than 330 peer-reviewed articles, more than 50 book chapters and non-peer-reviewed manuscripts, and also edited three books on the use of neuroimaging in studying mental and addictive disorders. A recipient of multiple awards, she was elected to membership in the Institute of Medicine, National Academy of Sciences, and was named "Innovator of the Year" in 2000 by U.S. News and World Report.
