SCIENCE WRITERS' SEMINAR ON CANCER SURVIVORSHIP:
NCI/Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern
University
Chicago, Ill., April 11, 2006

WHAT:
The number of cancer survivors in the United States is now over 10
million, and this number has grown exponentially over the past few
decades. Much of this increase can be attributed to better detection and
improved treatments. The Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of
Northwestern University has worked closely with the National Cancer
Institute (NCI), and other cancer centers, on advances that have had a
major impact on cancer survivors. Survivorship research focuses on the
health and life of a person with a history of cancer beyond the acute
diagnosis and treatment phase. It seeks to both prevent and control
adverse cancer diagnosis and treatment-related outcomes such as late
effects of treatment, second cancers, and poor quality of life, to
provide a knowledge base regarding optimal follow-up care and
surveillance of cancers, and to optimize health after cancer treatment.

Please join us for a series of talks on the latest research that will
help enhance the quality of life for cancer survivors nationwide as well
as on the programs that Northwestern and NCI have developed to assist
cancer survivors.
