May be because it may cause unnecessary annoying movements to skip unwanted mails?
I don't mind about such things myself, but sometimes similar things may really annoy someone.
At least it should has special tag in subject to easily right a new mail rule to forward it directly to trash.
ps. You guys want to discuss such thing right here, within this mailing list, am I got it right?

Ideally, if I we still use the name "linux kernel", then it should be
something related to linux kernel, but more relaxed.
One thing to notice is that kernelnewbies is not a high traffic list
and experience shows we're not that strict when talking in
kernelnewbies, except that we have to reject non related kernel
topics.
So, I guess, off topic list might not be needed...but that's just me.
