The Linux core networking code tends to stay very leading edge, so you
would need to be very networking knowledgeable to work in the core
area. As an example, IPv6 support went in over 5 years ago I believe.

On the other hand, there are a lot of drivers in the staging directory
that appear to be NIC related. And the fact they are in the staging
directory implies they need some love and attention.

So take a look at http://lxr.linux.no/#linux+v3.0.4/drivers/staging/
and see if any of those drivers look interesting to you to work on.

If so, you should see if anyone else is working on them. I'm not sure
how best to do that, but Greg KH is the maintainer that shepherds that
whole set of drivers, so he should know.
