I didn't do a 'make localmodconfig' after this.

Yes, I ran make and make install_modules after this stage. Forgot
writing it in my previous mail.

I didn't see a prompt of grub> Instead the following errors were
listed on the black screen :

Hi Ashish,

 I am not sure if this will help but you can try burning a system rescue CD and
using it to fix the issue. I believe you will be able to get back atleast your original
Ubuntu with full GUI..
