On which version of linux are you looking. Currenly I am working on 2.6.34 and it is very much there. You have to enable the following in the same order

Device Drivers -> /dev/agpgart (AGP Support)   /* Enable as *         */

Device Drivers -> /dev/agpgart (AGP Support)->Intel 440LX/BX/GX, I8xx and E7x05 chipset support  /* Enable as M */

Device Drivers -> Graphics Support -> Direct Rendering Manager (XFree86 4.1.0 and higher DRI support)  /* Enable as       */

Device Drivers -> Graphics Support -> Direct Rendering Manager (XFree86 4.1.0 and higher DRI support) -> Intel 830M, 845G, 852GM, 855GM, 865G /* Enable as M */

Device Drivers -> Graphics Support -> Direct Rendering Manager (XFree86 4.1.0 and higher DRI support) ->  i915 driver (New) /* Enable as M */

There seems to be no specific options in the configuration for i915's.
If I'm not wrong, it uses the same as for the i8x's and so on?

Xorg at the moment complains that it can't find the module i915 on my
gentoo box but then I haven't modulised anything much.

Can someone confirm the configuration that is needed for modsetting
(with) and i915?
