staging and life after that

I know that sometimes when you get started with the kernel the easiest way is to start with some device drivers, like the staging area. But for me there's nothing interesting there ... besides cleaning up stuff, there's no driver that my hardware supports so I don't feel the need to invest time in it.
Given these, what would be the next thing a newbie can start working on and actually gain some experience ?
