How to use the scripts/checkpatch.pl

One simple question I have tried to use the checkpatch.pl like

$ ./checkpatch.p patch1.patch

but it doesn't work it shows

Must be run from the top-level dir. of a kernel tree

Any idea of what I am doing wrong
