If you look through the kernel source, there are thousands of
individual copyright holders.  Each for their own little contribution.

True, except as non-copyright holders all derivations must still be GPL.

As the copyright holder, you could release a commercial version.  ie.
You could take your module and use it to create true Linux driver for
HP-UX as an example, then sell that driver commercially.  Only the
copyright holder can do that.

I think you have it right.  That is why many people call the GPL a
virus itself.  ie. It moves from the original code into any code it
comes in contact with.

Maybe you need to consider using BSD instead?

The BSD license is more liberal in allowing commercial code to be grafted on.
