how to retain the initrd contents after booting?

it's been a long while since i've tried it, but i thought that you
could retain the initrd image as a mounted directory with the
"retain_initrd" kernel parameter. i just tried it on my x86_64 fedora
11 system with a working 2.6.31 kernel, but i see nothing.

didn't this used to work? i'm sure there was something that would
leave that stuff mounted at /initrd, wasn't there?
