Hi Ajay,

The steps i would suggest would be as follows:
- learn basic and advanced C and data structures. Also, reading a good OS book(TANENBAUM) would be good.
- be comfortable with application development(although this step is not compulsory, my take is it good to know this)
- Linux kernel development by Robert Love is the book you must go through. You may want to see a Linux internals book before that.

Internet is always there to help. Look for some good documentation on sourceforge.net, TLDP, LWN etc. You may then post your kernel related queries on this mailing list.
