Mastering linux in totality is difficult or the least you can say is that its going to take lots n lots of time.
 
one approach that you can try is to pick up any subsystem that interests you say Device Drivers,Filesystem etc and get into the depth of it.Later on,probably when you are a little comfortable with it you can move on to other subsystems.
