Many thanks for the reply.  It looks like I was asking the wrong
question: the messages don't show up in dmesg or the kernel startup
messages (on the screen), nor in any system log that I can find.   The
thing I'm trying to debug occurs during bootup.  I think the messages
aren't getting compiled in at all, but I could be wrong.
