Can you try what this guy has done:

Another quick google, reveals the following fix:

sudo rmmod ehci_hcd
sudo modprobe ehci_hcd

No, you shouldn't have to do that

Out of curiosity, have you tried to use the disk on another machine? Or, have 
you tried another usb-disk that you *know* works? My point: are you 100% sure 
that it's not your protable disk?
