It's for embedded system, where we don't want initramfs 
due to space constrains, nor do we use dynamic /dev helpers (udev, mdev, ..)
for performance reasons. I know it's hack, but hey what's not ;))

It's handy if the filesystem can be 'patched' on-the-fly by the kernel
to make it bootable.
