with u-boot you can do this using the command tftpboot

never tried it with grub, but it seems to be supported:

i did this in the past, but don't have the config files anymore. iirc
i had a grub in the mbr with the distro selection using chainloader,
and another grub installation in each of the distro partitions. 

maybe your problem is that you didn't install grub in the other
partition?
