Is there any way of doing this ? > There is another way. Netlink sockets can be used to do the trick, since they can bring interface state for you. Take a look at a utility called ifchk (http://www.noorg.org/ifchk/ifchk.html). This is a good worakaround for the same trouble you are reporting.
