Hi,

Apart from building the kernel, did you download the filesystem from
the UML official page. Once you have downloaded you can run using

./linux ubd0=root_fs mem=512M

The second memory parameter is not mandatory, but i find it a good
idea to specify otherwise it fails sometimes due to insufficient swap
space.
