Onkar,

Why don't you "custom create" initrd for kernel X (using mkinitrd command). Try with no modules and selective add the modules untill it boots. And hence you'll have the "bare minimum" set of modules. At the minimum you'll need the hard disk driver and SCSI drivers (in case of SCSI). You may also need raid / LVM if you have that in your environment.
