I suggest a variation; remove the existing object file. Then run make V=1 target/object.o. This will give you the command line that is used to compile that particular file. Now you can replace the -c -o target/object.o with your -S and the assembly listing will be output. You may also use objdump -d to give the disassembly of an object file. This can sometimes be useful if you want to see addresses or avoid some of the "noise" that gcc adds.
