what's the rationale behind the *_initcall_sync() macros?

  just perusing the startup code and macros, and i notice that not one
of the *_initcall_sync macros defined in include/linux/init.h appears
to be invoked by *anyone*.  what's their function, if no one is using
them?  thanks.
