No, the cdrom.txt file was pretty clear and I followed the documentation
in there; I knew it's not a toggle.  I could post my code, but it's much
like yours.  Also, I compiled and ran your code with the same results as
my code (no error returned, also tray not locked).

I think I'll try uninstalling some kernel modules and see if that
changes my results.  (The application uses some proprietary modules, so
my kernel is tainted.)
