Hello.

What does the suffix gityy mean for a kernel version ?

for example 2.6.22-git17. what is it ?

It's a daily snapshot of Linus' kernel tree.

where is it accessible ?

kernel.org

why would someone use this tree ?

For testing.

I am working with a clone of the 'linus' git tree,
does it relate ?

Yes, it's just a snapshot of that tree for people who don't use git.
