What could be the possible reason? That usually happens when you compile the kernel on an NFS filesystem and the clocks between NFS server and client aren't synchronised. Use NTP to let them sync. The problem was , I was running Linux on VMWare evaluation version, it warned me that VMWare evaluation would expire in 6 days and therefore I backdated it. That is when the problem crept in.
