Obviously 2.6.20-1.2944.fc6 != 2.6.20 but do I need to match EXACTLY at
every decimal place? Doesn't this complicate distribution of drivers as
binaries?
Yup, that's the case. However, you can force it (via modprobe -f IIRC). There is also another options in modprobe to manually "feed" the kernel version and another strings usually checked to make sure compatibility.

yeah, this sounds complicating things, however AFAIK this is done to make sure your module works correctly without issues such as compiled with different gcc version, different stack, different API assumption and so on.
