Well, don't do that. Use something like this:

  cd ../../.. ; make ; cd -

Or have a separate xterm sitting in the top kernel directory and run
make over there.

It doesn't take long. You can do an explicit build by running

  make drivers/usb/host/ehci.ko

You can't. Just use multiple xterms.
